  18. <p>     Byron de la Beckwith was a happy man in 1964 when two
  19. different all-white juries deadlocked on whether he was guilty
  20. of shooting black civil rights leader Medgar Evers in Jackson,
  21. Miss. But Beckwith's tribulations are far from over: last week
  22. the avowed white supremacist and former fertilizer salesman, now
  23. 70, was arrested in Tennessee and charged once again with the
  24. 1963 killing.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     The case was revived after more than a quarter-century by
  27. Jackson's daily Clarion-Ledger, which last year ran a series of
  28. investigative stories on Beckwith's earlier trials. That
  29. prompted Hinds County district attorney Ed Peters and assistant
  30. D.A. Bobby DeLaughter to re-examine the 1964 proceedings. From
  31. then on, as DeLaughter puts it, evidence began "falling into our
  32. laps."
  33. </p>
  34. <p>     Evers' widow Myrlie produced a 1,500-page transcript of the
  35. earlier trials, though prosecutors had previously said that all
  36. known copies had disappeared. Then Beckwith's long-missing rifle
  37. mysteriously turned up in the garage of DeLaughter's
  38. father-in-law. Finally, two black witnesses are expected to
  39. place Beckwith in the vicinity of the shooting. Beckwith is
  40. fighting extradition to Mississippi. A hearing is scheduled for
  41. Feb. 22.
